After participating in numerous high-profile fashion events and witnessing the creative processes behind exceptional designs, one name consistently emerged. Fueled by curiosity and a fear of missing out (F.O.M.O), I embarked on a quest to uncover the identity of this guru. Intrigued and determined, I sought to explore further. Scanning through my contacts exhaustively, fortune favored me, and a friend provided the elusive contact. With the mission set, an appointment was secured.
Upon arrival, I was graciously ushered into the waiting area—a spacious room that defied conventional designer stereotypes. Adorned in pale yellow, its walls emanated warmth, complemented by the glow of a radiant chandelier that added a cozy ambiance. A woolen carpet underfoot welcomed visitors.
A hive of activity greeted me: a group engaged in lively conversation while deftly cutting fabric, an Arab girl meticulously ironing pieces of cloth on the floor, and a queue of white girls patiently waiting for their dress fittings. Amidst this tableau, a figure bent over a sewing machine with the precision of a neurosurgeon—she was Fatuma Asha. Following the completion of her task, our interview commenced. Interviewer: When did you start your journey in fashion, and what fueled your passion?
Fatumah Asha: In 2004, I pursued Fine Art at Makerere University, specializing in fashion. My passion for design began in childhood—I meticulously hand-stitched and revamped all my doll’s clothing. I also enjoyed purchasing oversized garments and skillfully altering them to fit.
Interviewer: What types of clothing do you specialize in?
Fatumah Asha: Primarily, I focus on bridal, red carpet, and casual attire. I tend to steer clear of traditional and corporate designs.
Interviewer: Why avoid traditional and corporate designs?
Fatumah Asha: Frankly, I find them unstimulating. My forte lies in creativity, and these fields restrict that aspect.
Interviewer: As a prominent figure in the fashion industry, have you collaborated with any celebrities?
Fatumah Asha: I’ve collaborated with numerous celebrities, predominantly artists and socialites. Pardon my boastfulness, but a considerable number of dresses showcased at Ugandan red-carpet events bear my signature.
Interviewer: What’s currently in vogue within the fashion industry?
Fatumah Asha: Off-shoulder gowns are immensely popular in bridal and casual wear. Additionally, flared pants have made a resounding comeback.
Interviewer: What distinguishes your designs from those of other designers?
Fatumah Asha: My hallmark lies in the precision of my finishing, fitting, and cutting techniques.
